Saturday 6th June will mark the 10th anniversary of the Jasper Gran Fondo. With less than 50 spaces available, there is not much time to sign up to this boutique event that sees cyclists ride the majestic roads of Jasper National Park.

Marmot Basin climb
The majestic Marmot Basin climb, which was the mainstay of the Tour of Alberta in 2015, is undergoing repairs. The road survived the enormous fire that engulfed the town and surrounding area in 2024. However, the trees and roots which kept the soil healthy did not and the impact has been subsidence in and around the road, an impact which Parks Canada is trying to resolve.
It is not yet known if the road, which is currently closed, will be reopened in time, but race organizer Trevor Soll has contingencies in place to cater for all eventualities.
Different routes
There are three different routes to cater for all fitness levels, 60km, 100km and 160km. If like me, you have not had the best winter training and are just finding your legs, the recommended option would be the 60 or 100km route. Some will be there to race, but others, like myself, will be treating it as a training ride and there just to enjoy riding amongst the mountains in majestic Jasper National Park.
If you don’t think you have the legs at this early stage of the season, there is an option to ride an e-bike, complete with its own category. A fully charged e-bike would certainly last the 60km route.
